What the Ryugu samples revealed: water, amino acids and the building blocks of RNA

From hydrated minerals to all five nucleobases — the key findings from Ryugu's pristine grains.

Hayabusa2's capsule delivered 5.4 grams of Ryugu to Earth in December 2020.[1] Because the grains were collected directly from the asteroid and sealed in the capsule, they avoid the contamination problems that affect meteorites that have fallen to the ground.[4]

A wet, carbon-rich world

A bulk sample of about 95 milligrams gave a water content of about 6.84% by weight, locked in minerals.[4] The samples closely resemble CI chondrites, a rare and chemically primitive class of meteorite, including in the amount and composition of presolar grains — specks of dust older than the Solar System itself.[4]

Organic molecules

  • Scientists identified 20 different amino acids in Ryugu material.[4]
  • In March 2023, researchers announced the detection of uracil, one of the four bases in RNA, and vitamin B3.[4]
  • In March 2026, all five canonical nucleobases were reported in the samples.[4]

None of this means Ryugu ever had life. It shows that some of the chemical ingredients used by life can form in space and be carried by asteroids.

Born far from the Sun?

Isotopes of hydrogen, nitrogen, titanium, chromium and molybdenum in the samples suggest that Ryugu's parent body formed in the outer Solar System. Yet the samples also contain grains that formed at temperatures above 1,000 °C close to the Sun and were later carried outward.[4]

A young surface on an old body

Ryugu itself is a rubble pile, reassembled from the debris of a larger parent body, and its surface is estimated to be only about 8.9 million years old.[4]
